Smudgy chins, weird hands, dodgy numbers: seven signs you're watching a deepfake

The Guardian

In a crucial election year for the world, with the UK, US and France among the countries going to the polls, disinformation is swirling around social media. There is much concern about deepfakes, or artificial intelligence-generated images or audio of leading political figures designed to mislead voters, and whether they will affect results. They have not been a huge feature of the UK election so far, but there has been a steady supply of examples from around the world, including in the US where a presidential election looms. Here are the visual elements to look out for. In deepfake videos the area around the mouth can be the biggest giveaway.

AI and art -- are creators about to become redundant? – DW – 02/01/2023

Australian singer Nick Cave came out strongly against an AI-generated track "in the style of Nick Cave" sent to him in January by a fan. It is "bullshit," said Cave. Meanwhile, three female fine artists recently filed a class action lawsuit in the US against several AI companies, charging them with theft of creative ideas. There's no doubt that artificial intelligence is making its way into the art world. While the consequences remain uncertain at this early stage, artists are already concerned about the appropriation of their intellectual property.

Reinforcement-learning AIs are vulnerable to a new kind of attack

The soccer bot lines up to take a shot at the goal. But instead of getting ready to block it, the goalkeeper drops to ground and wiggles its legs. Confused, the striker does a weird little sideways dance, stamping its feet and waving one arm, and then falls over. It's not a tactic you'll see used by the pros, but it shows that an artificial intelligence trained via deep reinforcement learning--the technique behind cutting-edge game-playing AIs like AlphaZero and the OpenAI Five--is more vulnerable to attack than previously thought. And that could have serious consequences.
